We take some time to ask some Qs and connect with some of our brand new peeps that have joined the Impulse family.
We welcome Paul from Bare Bones - Leaders in keeping it simple and focusing on actually living your life. Easy.
Tell me a little about Bare Bones?
Around 3 years ago the wallet I was using gave up the ghost. Because I over analyse everything, I’d already had a mental list of what I would do differently if I could make my own version. I’d just met a leather worker through friends and ran an idea past him about this minimal, slim wallet I wanted to make. I asked if he could help me put together a prototype and educate me about the process - luckily, for me, he was happy to help.
Five months later, after trying different sizes and testing it rigorously, we landed on a winner. I was really excited about it and would show any/everyone. I decided to put it in production - with one design in one colour. I saved up for the first production run and called it ‘Bare Bones’ which, at the time, not only seemed fitting due to the design approach, but also due to the fact that there was only one style and colour available.
From there, Bare Bones has dedicated itself to the minimal and essential - all the things you reach for when you’re leaving the house: sunnies, wallet, watch.
Your personal favourite product you sell?
I really love the Elements. Although I wear a ‘Moments’ and one pair of Bare Bones sunnies every day, the Elements is stuck to me like a bad tattoo you got when you were 18 and refuse to get it removed. Lucky for me, in the past couple of years, I’ve been able to do some travel for work and fun - my Elements has been with me everywhere: Nashville, Chicago, New York, Cabo, Hong Kong and Tasmania to name a few (ooh la la!).
What's your future vision for Bare Bones?
Bare Bones core range will always be around ‘essential items’. I’m really proud of the current range and I want to share that with as many people as I can - so they’re our staples and will stick around for a while.
We’ll continue to add to our Watches and Sunglasses range over time with new styles but the thing I’ve been working on lately has been more for funzies - I’ve been designing some small enamel pins and prints that we’ll throw up on the site in the future. We’ll be doing them in limited runs and releasing them periodically. Keep an eye out for that.
At the moment, I’m really involved in most parts of the process of Bare Bones - from designing the products, website, photography to packing the orders and writing the thank you notes to each customer. I really love that, especially being in touch with customers. Going forward, I want to get more Bare Bones into people’s hands - domestically and internationally - while still keeping connecting with the people who so kindly support us.
How would you describe your dream lifestyle?
Laura and our Kids. Guitars and Mates. Pizza & Beer.
Would you rather have an unlimited free international plane ticket for life or be able to eat at any restaurant you like for free for ever?
First Class. All.The.Way. I’ve never flown first class (or even Business Class for that matter), but if ‘unlimited’ was on offer, that means I can fly anywhere in the world and see all the things I’ve always wanted to. In that instance, I’d gladly pay local currency for my meals. First stop, Bagels in Brooklyn.
If you could start out again what would you do?
I’d worry less. My whole mantra with Bare Bones is ‘Keep it Simple’ - that’s a daily reminder for me to not overthink things, don’t stress, enjoy the moment because when it’s gone you can’t get it back. I grew up taking things a bit too seriously and I could have done without that a lot of the time.
From what you know about Impulse, what are you looking forward to most?
I’m a big fan of an ‘Outfit of the Day’ post on the socials with a list of the brands for each piece. I’d love to see that taken to the next step where each item was tagged and linked straight to a BUY NOW button or BUY OUTFIT option. If Impulse had that, I'd be spending money like a drunken sailor at port.
Can you recommend who we interview next?
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’m a massive fan of OrbitKey. If there’s one company that keeps it simple, tidy and tight, it’s OrbitKey. Next to my Bare Bones Elements, always sits my Orbit Key.
For those interested, we are running this brand new interview series to get to know as many Stores or Brands as possible. If you'd also like the chance to take part, showcase your stores personality, and forever get a pretty spot on the blog, drop me an email - firstname.lastname@example.org - and we'll get it done.
