Wellbeing: Where's Your Head At?

Wellbeing: Where's Your Head At?

With mental health awareness on the rise, its only right to speak about your mental wellbeing and how to look after it.

Let’s be clear — there is no one size fits all approach when it comes to looking after your mental health. It’s always different for each person, and these are basic principles that apply to everyone which can be put into action easily.

Finding something you enjoy doing in your spare time...

Try to find something you can see yourself doing frequently when you’re in a bit of a low, and use this as an outlet to escape from the real world. Whether it’s going for a run, learning a new skill or figuring out how to make that one amazing recipe, it makes the world of difference to your mental state. Imagine it as feeding your brain something new, it will thank you for it later as you’re exercising your mind in ways you maybe haven’t in a very long time. Enjoy writing? Have more structure to your days or week...

I see a lot of people who go through their daily life without much planned in their days except work, Netflix and the sofa. It’s really important to try to break up your week somehow with an activity of some sort. Whether it’s a yoga class, a gym session or seeing a few friends after work to interrupt your workflow, makes a huge difference to your week. All the days may not feel like the same and you’ll be able to differentiate the days come the end of the week (sounds really sad I know, but this is actually a real problem for some). Remember, not all of these breaks will need a lot of money if that’s your concern, but what they will do is show you there is a world outside of your bubble you may not be oblivious to at times.

Disconnect from the world during the day...

At a time where we are more connected than ever, it’s always good to take a break from all the distractions around us. Whether that’s taking time to remove yourself from your phone and meditate, or having a flight mode policy when in the gym, it will make the world of difference to your own mindset. So often we get distracted and bogged down with issues of what is happening around us with our friend’s problems that we do not notice that those same issues that shouldn’t bother us now do. We only have a finite amount of emotional energy to use a day, so spend some time with yourself and stop to re-evaluate things. Is your day going well? What did you enjoy most about your day so far? Will what you have planned for this day be beneficial for you, and if not then why are you doing it? This takes a couple of minutes a day, and the effect this can have on you is immeasurable.

Eat as well as you can...

On weekends, I’ve noticed my eating habits become a bit of a mess and I eat whatever I can get my hands on. However, I now have the awareness to know that I need to prepare my food even on the weekend. Reason being? I start to feel really lethargic, with the lack of energy and drive that I had in the week. I put that solely down to my food intake, and it makes me think what do people do who don’t plan their food for the week ahead? The types of food you eat directly affect your energy levels and productivity. I’m not saying change your diet completely and be miserable and don’t enjoy your food, but try to plan your food ahead for the week with some structure to what you eat. The energy highs and lows I have noticed I have when I eat foods high in sugar or heavily processed a day are pretty wild, and to be as useful as I want to be daily planning and cooking for 2 or 3 days in advance does me a world of good. If it’s affecting me at the age of just 26, how will that be so for the older generation in workplaces?
